Three chais walk into a glass
Chai is a word people stretch to mean a lot of things. At most coffee counters, "chai" is one sweet syrup poured into a paper cup. Real chai starts with black tea and warming spices. Where you take it from there is where things get interesting.
We make three chai blends at The Real Mr. Tea, and customers ask us which one to grab almost daily. Fair question. They share the same backbone but go in three different directions. Here's the breakdown of Dirty Chai, Vanilla Chai, and Lover's Chai: what's in each, how they taste, how much caffeine you're getting, and how to brew each one for a hot Kentucky afternoon.
Quick note on the search that probably brought you here. When people type "dirty chai vs chai tea," they want to know what makes a dirty chai different. Short answer: coffee. A dirty chai has coffee in it. A regular chai doesn't. Everything else below is the fun part.
What makes a dirty chai "dirty"
In coffee terms, a dirty chai is a chai latte with a shot of espresso dumped in. The chai brings the spice. The espresso brings the roast and the extra kick. That's the whole trick.
Our Dirty Chai does the same thing, except the coffee is already blended into the leaf. No espresso machine required.

from our shop
Dirty Chai
Premium black tea leaves, roasted coffee beans, clove, lemon peel, & chai spices
What's in the bag: black tea, roasted coffee beans, clove, lemon peel, and chai spices. That lemon peel is the sleeper ingredient. It brightens the whole cup and keeps the coffee-and-spice combo from feeling heavy. Brewed, it pours a deep amber-brown. On ice it drinks like your favorite iced coffee and a spiced chai decided to become one drink.
Caffeine is high. You're getting it from the black tea and the coffee beans both, so reach for this one on a slow morning or a long afternoon. If you're the person who orders a dirty chai at the coffee shop because regular chai feels too mellow, this is your blend. It's the boldest, roastiest chai we make.
Best for
- Coffee drinkers who are tea-curious
- Busy mornings when you need real energy
- Anyone who thinks plain chai is a little too polite
Vanilla Chai: the classic done right
If Dirty Chai is the rebel, Vanilla Chai is the crowd-pleaser. This is chai the way most people picture it. Warm, spicy, smooth, comforting.
The ingredient list reads like a proper spice cabinet: black tea, ginger root, cinnamon bark, cardamom pods, black pepper, white pepper, clove buds, nutmeg seed, and calendula petals. The double dose of black and white pepper is what gives real chai its gentle heat, the kind that warms the back of your throat without burning. The vanilla rounds all those spices into something soft and creamy.
No coffee here, so it's a cleaner, spice-forward cup. It still brews a rich amber-brown and still hits high caffeine from the black tea, but the energy feels smoother than the Dirty Chai's roasted jolt.
This is the one that plays nicest with milk. A splash of whole milk or oat milk turns it into a cafe-style chai latte, and a small drizzle of honey finishes it. It's also our best chai for people new to loose leaf who want something familiar.
Best for
- People who love a classic chai latte
- Anyone adding milk and a little sweetener
- The whole household, since it's easy to like
Lover's Chai: chai with a bouquet
Lover's Chai is our most unexpected blend, and honestly the prettiest one in the bag. It takes a bold spiced chai and folds in flowers.
Ingredients: bold black tea, ginger root, cinnamon bark, cardamom pods, a touch of black and white pepper, clove bud, nutmeg, and a floral mix of jasmine, rose, and lavender petals. You get all that classic chai warmth from the ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom, softened by rose, lavender, and jasmine into something elegant.
One of our customers put it better than we could:
This beautifully crafted blend combines Jasmine, rose petals, and lavender, such a pretty looking blend. I prepared it using water from the kettle and steeped for 5 minutes; next time, I plan to attempt a traditional Cha
She's right about that five-minute steep. That's the sweet spot for the spices to open up. Caffeine is high, same as our other chais, thanks to the black tea base.
The floral notes make this a special-occasion chai. Serve it when you want people to notice the tea. It makes a genuinely nice gift too.
Best for
- Anyone who wants chai with a softer, floral side
- Sharing, gifting, or treating yourself
- Slower afternoons when you're actually tasting the cup
Side by side
Here's the fast comparison, since that's probably what you scrolled down for.
- Dirty Chai: black tea plus real coffee. Boldest and roastiest. High caffeine from tea and coffee together. Lemon peel keeps it bright. Iced coffee energy meets chai.
- Vanilla Chai: classic spice-forward chai, no coffee. Smooth, creamy, comforting. High caffeine from black tea. Best with milk and honey.
- Lover's Chai: spiced chai with rose, jasmine, and lavender. Floral and elegant. High caffeine from black tea. The pretty one for sharing.
All three come in the same sizes, so it's easy to mix and match: Small at $11.99, Medium at $21.99, Large at $34.99, and a Cold Brew Gallon Bag at $11.99. Heads up that Vanilla Chai runs a touch higher on the loose sizes ($14.99 Small, $27.49 Medium, $43.99 Large) because it stretches to more cups per bag. You can see all of them on our shop.
How to brew each one, hot and iced
These are all black tea based, so the rules are the same across the board. It's August in Louisville, though, so let's talk iced first.
Iced chai, the concentrate method
Good iced chai isn't hot chai poured over ice. The melting cubes water it down. Brew it stronger, then pour over ice.
- Use about 1.5 teaspoons of leaf per 8 ounces, roughly double what you'd use hot.
- Heat your water to around 208 degrees, just off a boil.
- Steep 5 minutes.
- Strain and pour straight over a full glass of ice.
- Add cold milk and a little sweetener to taste.
Dirty Chai shines here. That coffee-and-chai combo over ice is exactly what the blend was built for. Vanilla Chai iced with cold oat milk and honey is basically a chai latte for a heat wave. Lover's Chai iced stays floral and refreshing, and it looks gorgeous in a clear glass.
The cold brew gallon bag
Want the easy button? Grab a Cold Brew Gallon Bag. Drop it in a gallon pitcher of cold water, stick it in the fridge overnight, pull the bag in the morning, and you've got a gallon ready to go. Cold brewing pulls out plenty of flavor with less bitterness, which suits spiced blends. This is our go-to for cookouts and back porch afternoons.
If you want it hot
Same leaf, same 208-degree water, 4 to 5 minutes of steep. Add milk and sweetener. Chai holds up well to milk, which is why it's one of the few teas we actively tell you to doctor up.
Which chai should you actually buy
Still stuck? Let's make it simple.
If you drink coffee every morning and you're wondering whether tea could ever hit the same, start with Dirty Chai. It's the bridge. You get the roast you already love plus something new.
If you want the chai everyone recognizes, the safe and delicious pick, go with Vanilla Chai. It's the one we'd hand a first-timer.
If you want something a little special, a chai with flowers in it that feels like a treat, reach for Lover's Chai. It's also our favorite to give as a gift.
Plenty of folks end up keeping all three around for different moods. That's the fun of loose leaf. And if you'd rather taste before you commit, we bring our mobile tea cart to markets and events around Louisville. Come find us and sip a cup, or check our events page to see where we'll be. Planning a wedding or a bridal shower? A chai bar with all three is a genuinely good time. Reach us through our contact page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a dirty chai and regular chai tea?
A dirty chai has coffee in it and regular chai doesn't. At a coffee shop that means a shot of espresso added to a chai latte. Our Dirty Chai builds the coffee right into the loose leaf blend, so you get roasted coffee flavor plus black tea and chai spices without needing an espresso machine.
Does dirty chai have more caffeine than regular chai?
Yes. Our Dirty Chai draws caffeine from black tea and roasted coffee beans both, so it lands on the higher end. Our Vanilla Chai and Lover's Chai are also high caffeine, but that comes from black tea alone. The Dirty Chai's kick is the strongest of the three.
Can you make chai without coffee?
Yes. Our Vanilla Chai and Lover's Chai are coffee-free spiced black teas. If you want chai flavor without any coffee, either one works, and both still bring plenty of caffeine from the black tea base.
How do you make iced chai that isn't watered down?
Brew it stronger than usual, about 1.5 teaspoons of leaf per 8 ounces, steep 5 minutes in near-boiling water, then pour straight over a full glass of ice. Brewing at double strength means the melting ice dilutes it back to just right. Or use one of our Cold Brew Gallon Bags overnight in the fridge for the easiest version.
Should you add milk to chai?
With these three, go for it if you like. Vanilla Chai in particular loves a splash of whole or oat milk and a little honey, which turns it into a proper chai latte. Dirty Chai takes milk well too, iced-latte style. Lover's Chai works both ways, so try it plain first to catch the floral notes, then add milk if you want it creamier.
